Every day is a school day

I’m a great believer in never ending your education and that as the old saying goes, every day is a school day. If we stop learning we stop evolving and we might not reach our full potential or even enjoy life as much as we should.

I’d like to share with you ten things I have learned over the years that may help you in your personal and business life.

Have the ability to stop and change your day

Human beings are creatures of habit and as Aristotle once said:

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.”

I’d urge everyone to take time every day to stop and pause, then reflect on what you can do to stop bad habits. You can then create new behaviours, which if repeated, have the power to change your days, weeks and years for the better.

Develop and stick to a consistent morning routine

We are all busy with responsibilities and obligations and time is an ever dwindling commodity. Creating a positive morning routine can make all the difference to the success of your day.

Try breaking down your daily tasks into small steps, then scheduling everything by starting from the end of the day and working backwards.

If we know how we will start our day then we feel organised, productive and can better reach our goals.

Ensure you get enough sleep

Are you sleeping well? Sleep is the medicine for various illnesses. Sleep and happiness are intertwined. There is a machismo about working long hours, but burning the candle at both ends just means you get burnt out.

If the only thing you take from this article is getting more sleep then it’s a positive step. Sleep has many benefits but 2 of the most important are that sleep is the brain’s housekeeping period, when the toxins that build up during waking hours are flushed out.

Also the resting brain makes connections from the day’s experiences to previous learning, leading to inferences, associations, problem-solving and deeper-level learning that you can use in your waking moments.

Don’t sulk about setbacks, do something about it!

If you’re dissatisfied with where you are in life or business, don’t moan about it. Don’t let it get you down, do something about it. Stop and identify the problem. Look at how your problem is impacting your life or business and then finally listen to your heart and inner self and decide what you have to do, then do it.

Break sweat every day

Regular exercise is an important part of not just physical health, but also mental health. Sadly when we get busy exercise is usually one of the first things we set aside. Don’t let this happen, make time for a physical hobby or activity you enjoy. Make one of your goals to never allow your exercise time to be compromised.

Remember a walk around the block is better than nothing, if that’s all you have time for, but for the most benefit you need to break sweat every day.

Focus on the right now

We must all learn from the past but not dwell on it. Also don’t obsess or worry about the future. I have learned through bitter experience that it’s counterproductive to worry about the future. It is far better to concentrate on the right now and work on how you can improve your future.

If you do worry about the past techniques such as mindfulness, deep breathing and even meditation can help you focus on the here and now and give you greater control over shaping your future.

Set goals you can reach not just aspire to

Goal setting can help you be more successful and happier but far too many of us get carried away and set some goals that are unattainable. Yes goals should stretch you, but the key word is achievable. When deciding on your goals ask yourself “Is this realistic and can I actually attain this goal?” If the answer is no, then consider breaking that goal down into smaller steps or modifying it altogether.

Reframe the negative into a positive

II firmly believe that every problem has a solution, the hard part is looking for it. It’s easy to feel negative when faced with problems but it’s far more beneficial to reprogram your mind and ask yourself how can I solve this problem and what can I learn from the process.

It’s not easy but success in life and business comes from overcoming the negatives that come our way. Try to view day to day hurdles in a different light and you may find your attitude changes and negatives over time become positives.

Don’t worry about what you can’t control

We can only change what we can control or influence, so why worry about what we can’t control. It’s best to let that go. Why use your energy and personal power to try and solve problems that you have no control over. Focus on what you can change and you’ll be much happier.

Visualise your intentions

In sports positive visualization increases the likelihood of success. This is because we largely create our own realities through our thoughts and intentions. If you want to succeed in life or business visualise what success looks like and write down your goals and objectives.

These are simple ideas you have probably tried before. I’d urge you now to try them again and stick at it and remember every day is a school day, so never stop learning.
